Between 2022 and 2024, with the support of the Heritage Emergency Fund, UNESCO worked closely with local partners to implement activities to support the resilience of Ukrainian school children through enhancing awareness of their living heritage.
In the initial phase, 12 schools -including 10 UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPnet)- developed pilot projects integrating living heritage in teaching sciences and other subjects. A tailor-made resource kit for primary and secondary school teachers, ‘Teaching and learning with living heritage in Ukraine’ was developed and officially launched in July 2024. Results showed that teaching with living heritage mobilized teachers and whole school communities while improving the well-being of all those who participated, and fostering inclusion among children from diverse nationalities, minorities, and Indigenous Peoples’ groups, as well as those with disabilities.
Building on this result, the second phase of the project was officially launched on 16 September 2025. It will be implemented with the active participation of the Ministry of Culture and Strategic Communication, the Ministry of Education and Sciences, the National Commission of Ukraine for UNESCO, the ASPnet in Ukraine, and other partners.
UNESCO, together with the Junior Academy of Sciences in Ukraine and the NGO Development Centre Democracy through Culture, will train up to 100 teacher-trainers from about 60 schools across Ukraine, equipping them with knowledge and skills needed to implement small concrete pilot projects in their classrooms. An online platform offering different resources in Ukrainian will be developed in cooperation with local partners and will serve as a ‘one-stop-shop’ for primary and secondary school teachers interested in the approach. It will provide information on teaching about and with living heritage in Ukraine, including links to other resources such as the UNESCO clearinghouse on living heritage and education.
