The need for an overall reflection on the intent and purpose of the listing mechanisms was clearly expressed by the Committee for the first time in 2017. Following this, a consultation with experts has been organized over the month of May 2021. The working documents for the expert meeting will be published in June 2021.

A series of expert meetings organized in the framework of the global reflection on the listing mechanisms of the 2003 Convention ended yesterday.

Launched by the Intergovernmental Committee at its thirteenth session in 2018, this ongoing process led to discussions within the Committee in 2019 and during the General Assembly in 2020. The reflection continued with an online survey dedicated to experts between March and April 2021.

Over the past month, experts were invited to work in breakout groups focusing on themes such as the criteria of inscription on the Lists, the follow-up of inscribed elements or the methodology for the evaluation of nominations. The results of the breakout groups’ discussions are presented in the form of preliminary recommendations during the plenary and concluding sessions of the expert meeting on 26 and 27 May.

This category VI expert meeting will help to lay the basis for discussions within an open-ended intergovernmental working group, which will take place from 8 to 10 July 2021.
