On 11 September 2026, the conference ‘Generative Traditions. Living Heritage and Artificial Intelligence. New Horizons - Exploring Cultural Possibilities’ will take place at the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum in Athens, Greece.
Organized by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture in partnership with UNESCO, the hybrid conference will bring together experts in living heritage, artificial intelligence (AI), digital technologies, research and cultural policy.
Conceptualized as a space for reflection and exchange, the conference will explore the opportunities and challenges emerging at the intersection of intangible cultural heritage and artificial intelligence. Discussions will examine how AI is reshaping approaches to living heritage, from documentation and research to safeguarding and transmission of cultural practices in digital environments.

Opening remarks will be delivered by H.E. Dr Lina Mendoni, Minister of Culture of the Hellenic Republic, and Mr Nayef Al-Fayez, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture, alongside other distinguished representatives. The conference will feature speakers from the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, universities, UNESCO Chairs, research institutions as well as the Hellenic Copyright Organization, among others.
A highlight of the programme will be a keynote speech on ‘Artificial Intelligence and Intangible Cultural Heritage: Mapping terra (in)cognita’, delivered by the Chairholder of the UNESCO Chair on Intangible Cultural Heritage in Public and Global Governance, (Prof Hanna Schreiber (University of Warsaw). This will be followed by two sessions on rethinking intangible cultural heritage in the era of artificial intelligence and research ecosystems for intangible cultural heritage and AI.
The day will conclude with a round table on public policies and future directions, aimed at building a research and policy agenda in this rapidly evolving field.
