The purpose of this session is to update facilitators’ knowledge on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in situations of conflict and displacement, and on related capacity-building approaches. It is part of the 2026 Training programme for the Global facilitators’ network, which takes a two-way approach to both strengthen facilitators’ knowledge in key thematic areas while providing opportunities for experience sharing.

UNESCO’s approach in this field is based on the Operational principles and modalities for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in emergencies approved by the General Assembly in 2020 (Resolution 8.GA 9). Subsequently UNESCO developed two training units which introduce the links between safeguarding intangible cultural heritage and situations of conflict and forced displacement (Unit 65) and provide guidance on conducting community-based needs identifications in these contexts (Unit 66) for intangible cultural heritage in situations of conflict and forced displacement. It also developed a guide for humanitarian workers on safeguarding living heritage in in situations of conflict and forced displacement (forthcoming).

This training session will introduce facilitators to these resources and provide an opportunity to share experiences and lessons learnt from working in situations of conflict and displacement under the 2003 Convention. The session is designed for all facilitators, regardless of prior experience in this area and will be delivered in English and French.
