The fifth extraordinary session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage was held fully online on 1 July 2022.

This extraordinary session of the Committee was convened at the request of the sixteenth session of the Committee (Decision 16.COM 14) as part of the ongoing global reflection on the listing mechanisms of the 2003 Convention. Following the Committee’s decision to extend the mandate of the Open-ended intergovernmental working group in the framework of the abovementioned global reflection with a Part III meeting (online, 25 and 26 April 2022), this extraordinary session examined further proposals of amendments to the Operational Directives for the Implementation of the Convention for presentation to the ninth session of the General Assembly of the States Parties to the Convention (UNESCO Headquarters, 5 to 7 July 2022).

Furthermore, the Committee inscribed the Culture of Ukrainian borscht on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding, as a case of extreme urgency.
