Géraldine Chatelard is a social historian and anthropologist specialising in the contemporary Middle East, affiliated with IREMAM (Aix-en-Provence). Her research spans from conflict-induced displacement, nomadic communities, and religious practices and identities. She has experience in governance of tangible and intangible cultural heritage across the MENA region, with a focus on policy development, community participation, and integrating local knowledge into management, fostering synergies between the 1972 and 2003 Conventions. As a member of the global facilitators network of the 2003 Convention, she has conducted needs assessments and provided policy advisory and capacity-building on inventorying and nominations. She has also contributed to the 2020 Operational Principles for Safeguarding ICH in Emergencies.
