The UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN Networks Programme is UNESCO’s network for inter-university cooperation. It brings together the expertise of higher education and research institutions to help address the complex challenges facing the world today. It promotes integrated approaches to research, training and academic activities across diverse fields by strengthening university networks, fostering institutional, and facilitating the international exchange of knowledge and expertise.

In the field of living heritage safeguarding, UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN Networks (there are currently nineteen such entities) contribute to training the next generation of decision makers and professionals, generating knowledge and developing innovative methodologies to support community-based safeguarding, and providing conceptual guidance on linking intangible cultural heritage with key thematic areas of work under the Convention.

This coordination meeting aims to bring together Chairholders and their core team members, including staff and students, to explore ways of strengthening collaboration and information exchange with a view to maximizing their contribution to the implementation of UNESCO’s programme in the field of intangible cultural heritage and the priorities of the 2003 Convention. The meeting will also provide updated information on the status, scope and impact of the work carried out by the Chairs and Networks and will discuss strategies to strengthen an effective and regionally balanced network.
