Regional experience-sharing workshop under the project ‘Building capacities for safeguarding living heritage and preparing nominations to the Lists of the 2003 Convention in Africa’
In the framework of the Japanese Funds-in-Trust cooperation project ‘Building capacities for safeguarding living heritage and preparing nominations to the Lists of the 2003 Convention in Africa’, this regional experience-sharing workshop brings together the nine project countries (namely, Comoros, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Eswatini, Gabon, Guinea Bissau, Lesotho, Sao Tome and Principe and South Sudan), as well as selected African countries with recent experience in nominations.
The workshop provides a space for peer learning and collective reflection on good practices and challenges in preparing nomination files to the Lists of the Convention. It builds on the practical experience gained through the project and the preceding national capacity-building workshops.
Generously funded by the Government of Japan, the project contributes to safeguarding and promoting the rich diversity of intangible cultural heritage in Africa, with a focus on countries that, at the time of the preparation of the project in 2023, had no elements of living heritage inscribed on the Lists of the 2003 Convention. It aims to strengthen the skills and knowledge of States Parties in the region in preparing nomination files for the Convention’s Lists, thereby further enhancing the recognition of Africa’s living heritage and sustaining and expanding its presence on the lists of the Convention.
