The twenty-first session of the Intergovernmental Committee will be generously hosted by China from 30 November to 5 December 2026 in Xiamen. The Committee in December 2025 approved this offer with enthusiasm.
H.E. Mr GAO Zheng, Vice-Minister of Culture and Tourism of the People’s Republic of China will chair this twenty-first session of the Committee, with the Bureau members from Spain, Ukraine, Haiti, Zambia and Algeria as Vice-Chairpersons, as well as Mr Arnaud Lelion-Lupart (France) as Rapporteur.
China ratified the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2004. To date, 45 living heritage elements practised in China are inscribed on the Lists and Register: 3 on the Urgent Safeguarding List ; 40 on the Representative List ; and 2 in the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices. Most recently in 2024 and 2025, four of these elements have been transferred from the Urgent Safeguarding List to the Representative List, and one programme has been selected to the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices. These transfers illustrate the impact of safeguarding efforts undertaken by the national authorities in close collaboration with communities, practitioners and bearers.
