Living heritage enriches education by grounding learning in the cultural contexts of learners and their communities, making it more relevant and transformative. Integrating it into formal and non-formal education supports cultural diversity, social cohesion, and the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage, as outlined in Articles 2 and 14 of the 2003 Convention.

The Living Heritage Entity and the Section of Global Citizenship and Peace Education at UNESCO organized the first edition of the online Training of trainers on living heritage and education in the spirit of Sustainable Development Goal 4 “Quality Education”, Target 4.7 on education for sustainable development and global citizenship. The training took place in five 3-hour sessions, on 16, 18, 25, 30 June and on 2 July 2021. A second edition was organized in October and November 2021.

Bringing together UNESCO’s Culture and Education Sectors, and in the framework of the intersectoral programme on safeguarding intangible cultural heritage in formal and non-formal education, the online training strengthened the capacities of 18 experts in culture and education from across the world to act as resource persons able to support and promote the convergence of education programmes and the safeguarding of living heritage.
