State Folklore Review UHAKUD u BiH

The main goal for which the association UHAKUD u BiH (Association of Croatian amateur cultural and artistic societies in Bosnia and Herzegovina) was founded is the preservation of the intangible cultural heritage of Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In order to realize this goal, we designed annual programs that enable the transfer of cultural heritage to new generations, its presentation and promotion. The State Folklore Review UHAKUD u BiH is one of those annual programs of UHAKUD u BiH. It is preceded by folklore fairs at the county level, organized on the same principle and with the same content. The best programs and groups participate in the State Review UHAKUD u BiH .

The folklore Review has the following contents through which we realize the stated goals and objectives:

  • Ceremonial parade of folklore groups through the streets of the city, accompanied by song and short breaks with dance, in order to animate the audience;
  • Exhibitions and fairs of traditional crafts and handicrafts, in order to promote this form of cultural heritage, selling souvenirs and the possibility of purchasing equipment for folklore groups (costumes, traditional musical instruments, accessories);
  • Traditional cuisine and drinks, in order to promote traditional dishes, allows guests to enjoy the gastronomic offer, provides participants with a meal and makes the program more sustainable;
  • Performance of customs on stage: Each group has the task of researching, describing and preparing a short presentation of customs from their local community. Every other year, the group should prepare another custom from their place. The performance is monitored by an expert team composed of experts for various forms of cultural heritage, who are hired by UHAKUD u BiH for these purposes, as well as organizers of folklore festivals from neighboring countries who directly select groups and programs for their festivals.
  • Round table: After the performance of the program, representatives of folklore groups, representatives of the Professional College, organizers and representatives of the local administration discuss all the programs of the Review with the aim of improving the program and finding a model of its sustainability.
  • The professional board writes a report on each presented custom and submits its observations to the administration of UHAKUD u BiH for all programs, and for each group separately what relates to the group in question and the displayed custom.

Minutes are archived in the association. From these documents, it is possible to follow the changes of individual elements of ICH over time, the development of each individual folklore group, but also the development of UHAKUD u BiH.

This year’s the State Folklore Review UHAKUD u BiH is dedicated to the celebration of the 20th anniversary of the Convention on intangible cultural heritage, and as part of the program, there will be announcements for the audience as well as a seminar on the topic “Contribution of guidelines from the ICH convention to the preservation of cultural heritage”.

All local and national media regularly cover the show’s programs. In order to celebrate the Anniversary of the ICH Convention, this year we have prepared an additional press conference and will print several copies of the brochures, using the logo of the Anniversary Convention and additional informative text about the Anniversary.
