Live Baul Music at Bannabagram Baul Ashram by Lalu Fakir and team
Baul music is a living, syncretic tradition of Bangladesh and West Bengal in India, embodying a philosophy that transcends caste, creed, and material boundaries. Rooted in mysticism, it emphasises the search for the divine within the human body, blending spiritual inquiry with poetic expression. Baul songs explore themes of love, unity, self-realisation, and the interconnectedness of body, mind, and soul, passed down through the Guru-disciple lineage and practiced in intimate, community-centered gatherings.
To celebrate this Intangible Cultural Heritage inscribed in the UNESCO Representative List of Heritage of Humanity, Lalu Fakir and his team from Murshidabad district of West Bengal will organise an event at the Bannabagram Baul Ashram, a vibrant cultural space of West Bengal. Lalu Fakir, a senior Baul exponent, has been instrumental in reviving the akhra-based Baul music tradition and mentoring younger generations. His repertoire features traditional Baul songs, preserving the essence of this rich spiritual and musical heritage for contemporary audiences.
