Intangible Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Development in the Basque Country project

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural, UN Etxea - Basque Country Association for UNESCO with the support of the Department of Culture of the Basque Government is implementing the project “Intangible Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Development”.

This project aims to strengthen the capacities of communities, groups and individuals who participate in the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage (ICH) of the Basque Country and raise awareness about the importance of ICH in building sustainable societies.

To this goal, tools and spaces will be created for the promotion, dissemination and training in intangible heritage and its contribution to sustainable development.

Expected results.

  • Communities, groups and individuals, as well as public administration staff, have strengthened their capacities to adopt measures to safeguard their cultural expressions.
  • Basque citizens are aware of the importance of intangible cultural heritage and its need for promotion and safeguarding.

The project contemplates the realization of the following actions:

  • an animation audio-visual to disseminate and raise awareness about the importance of intangible cultural heritage;
  • a publication on intangible heritage and its contribution to the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals;
  • a meeting in September in Bilbao with communities, groups and experts in intangible heritage of our territory; and
  • accompaniment process for the school community of the Centro Formativo Otxarkoaga (Bilbao) on living heritage, cultural diversity and the social dimension of the development in the frame of “Ondare Up! Youth, heritage, and diversities” https://www.ondareup.org/, initiative promoted by UN Etxea.

In the coming months we will be specifying the launch dates of the publication, the audio-visual and the meeting.

For the implementation of all these activities we are collaborating closely with the communities, the Department of Culture of the Basque Government, and the school community of the Centro Formativo Otxarkoaga (Bilbao).
