Danziri Festivals of the Ueno Tenjin Shrine - Shinko Festival
The Ueno Tenjin Festival is the autumn festival of Ueno Tenjingu Shrine, the guardian
deity and tutelary god of the land, set against the backdrop of Iga’s deeply religious and culturally rich traditions.
During the Ueno Tenjin Festival’s “Shinko Festival,” the procession accompanying the
two mikoshi portable shrines of Ueno Tenjingu Shrine is followed by a demon parade
and a danjiri float parade, which then proceed through the town.
Programme of the event
- On the occasion of the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage on October 17th, nine danjiri floats decorated with curtains and metal fittings will be pulled out onto the town streets for display.
- On October 18th, nine danjiri floats parade through the streets playing traditional
festival music. The demon procession, led by the sound of conch shells and drums,
advances along Sannomachi Street.
- On October 19th, the “Shinko Festival” features a procession of mikoshi portable
shrines, a parade of demons, and danjiri floats traveling through the towns throughout
the day.
