As part of the project ‘Latin America and the Caribbean: Strengthening Capacities for Resilient Communities through Sustainable Tourism and Heritage Safeguarding’, UNESCO has provided support across the region to explore synergies between living heritage safeguarding and sustainable urban development. This initiative is funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia within the framework of the UNESCO Programme on Culture and Digital Technologies.

The main objective was to strengthen capacities of national and local officials, together with key stakeholders and community members, to safeguard living heritage in urban contexts and integrate it into urban planning processes.

The hybrid meeting brings together project country teams, representatives from the Permanent Delegations to UNESCO concerned by the project, and key project stakeholders to share insights and outcomes of the hands-on training workshops held in nine cities across Latin America and the Caribbean (i.e. Belmopan, Belize; Trinidad, Cuba; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; San Salvador, El Salvador; Antigua, Guatemala; Trujillo, Honduras; Colón, Panama; San José, Costa Rica; Oaxaca, Mexico).

In addition to highlighting the results of the capacity-building approach, the meeting will foster dialogue, peer exchange and strengthen networking among participating cities and countries.
