Overview:

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for The Gambia to improve the integration of intangible cultural heritage into national initiatives for emergency recovery, preparedness and disaster risk reduction (DRR). To this end, the National Centre for Culture and Arts, in collaboration with the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and the National Disaster Management Agency, as well as UNESCO’s Multisectoral Regional Office for West Africa (Sahel) in Dakar, will:

i) conduct research on the role of intangible cultural heritage in mitigating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and of natural and human-induced disasters (deforestation, floods) and in supporting the recovery of communities from the pandemic;
ii) develop a pilot basic inventory of intangible cultural heritage elements contributing to DRR including specific information on the impact of the pandemic on these elements and basic action plans for safeguarding and communication;
iii) integrate these elements into national DRR plans and school curricula.

This intersectoral activity, involving UNESCO’s Culture and Education Sectors, is implemented in the framework of UNESCO’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
