In the context of the 2003 Convention’s global capacity-building programme, this project is designed to strengthen capacities for safeguarding intangible cultural heritage at national and local levels, including among government institutions and communities in Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar. More specifically, the objectives of the project are the following:

  • Contribute to sustainable development in the United Republic of Tanzania through the implementation of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage;
  • Draw attention to the importance of Tanzanian living heritage and its key societal role as a vector of cultural diversity and creativity;
  • Strengthen institutional and legal frameworks to achieve more effective implementation of the 2003 Convention at the national level;
  • Build the capacities and train competent institutions and civil society in inventorying to produce better documentation and achieve more effective safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage;
  • Increase awareness and active participation of communities in safeguarding their living heritage;
  • Enhance monitoring for the implementation of the Convention.

Trainings will be targeted at government officials, civil society, community representatives and other national stakeholders in the core areas of the Convention. The project will be implemented by the UNESCO Dar es Salaam Office in close collaboration with the National Commission for UNESCO in the United Republic of Tanzania, Ministries responsible for Culture as well as relevant national partners, and the support of the UNESCO Secretariat.
