Overview:

The project supports Sierra Leone and South Africa – the most recent States Parties to the 2003 Convention – in creating the conditions for the effective safeguarding of living heritage present in their territory.

It will strengthen national capacities in both countries on key concepts and community-based approaches for safeguarding living heritage, while also equipping them with knowledge and tools to engage with the Convention’s international cooperation mechanisms, including preparing nominations to its Lists and Register.

Tailored to the specific situation and needs in each country, the project will deliver targeted capacity-building activities and develop a roadmap for the implementation of the Convention in each country. By creating synergies with the ongoing Japan-funded project ‘Building capacities for safeguarding living heritage and preparing nominations to the Lists of the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Africa’, it will also foster peer learning and regional exchange.
