The nineteenth session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage officially began on Sunday 1 December 2024, with a vibrant opening ceremony at the Cultural Centre of the Port of Asunción in the Republic of Paraguay.

The President of Paraguay, Santiago Peña; UNESCO Director-General, Audrey Azoulay; and the Minister of Culture of Paraguay, Adriana Ortiz attended the ceremony. Their speeches underscored the importance of safeguarding living heritage in fostering cultural diversity, social cohesion, and sustainable development.

H.E. Ms Nancy Ovelar de Gorostiaga, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary and Permanent Delegate of the Republic of Paraguay to UNESCO is the chairperson of this annual gathering. The session, bringing together some 1,000 representatives from across the globe, will run until Saturday 7 December 2024.

The items of the agenda notably include the examination of nominations submitted by States Parties for inscription on the Lists of the Convention of :

  • 58 nominations to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
  • 3 requests for transfer of elements from one list to the other.
  • 2 nominations to the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.
  • 3 proposals to the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices.

The 19th session also examines:

  • 18 reports by States Parties on the status of elements inscribed on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding,
  • 44 reports on the implementation of the Convention and the status of elements inscribed on the Representative List in Africa.
