UNESCO is pleased to partner with the General Assembly of the United Nations in organizing a high-level event on the occasion of the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, taking place on Friday 21 May. The theme for the event is “Building back better: towards a more resilient and impactful culture sector, throughout COVID-19 and the Decade of Action”. This one-day event will highlight the best practices and policy adaptations needed to ensure the cultural sector’s contributions to COVID-19 relief and recovery strategies, and to fully realize culture’s transformational potential as an underutilized accelerator for implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (see program here).
Tangible and intangible cultural heritage have the demonstrated ability to drive social inclusion, poverty eradication, responsible environmental stewardship, sustainable economic growth and ownership of development processes.
The interface Dive into Living Heritage and Sustainable Development shows detailed linkages between the 16 Sustainable Development Goals and specific elements of ICH listed under the 2003 convention. Another interface, Dive into Living Heritage shows the broad reach of living heritage.
