Workshop: Sign Language as a vehicle for cultural transmission

As part of a series of events organized in October 2025 by the Instituto Nacional de Patrimonio Cultural (INPC) to mark the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, this workshop, organized jointly by INPC and the Metropolitan Heritage Institute of Quito, will take place on October 13, 2025 at La Circasiana.

Led by anthropologist Fernanda Bossano, the session targets INPC staff with two key objectives: to demonstrate how Deaf communities preserve and transmit intangible cultural heritage through Ecuadorian Sign Language, and to train participants in designing accessible communication strategies for heritage institutions. The workshop includes practical exercises on basic sign language, analysis of case studies from Deaf cultural expressions, and guidelines for creating inclusive digital content. This initiative responds to UNESCO’s call for safeguarding linguistic diversity as intangible heritage.
