Water & Land Symposium - Intangible Heritage and Sustainable Development

On 3 October, Antwerp hosts the concluding event of the international project Water & Land. Intangible Heritage and Sustainable Development. Over the past three years, this project has explored how intangible heritage practices can inspire climate adaptation, biodiversity protection, and sustainable futures. During this contact day, we present the main results of the project and reflect together on the way forward.

Organised by the Centre for Agrarian History (CAG) and the Dutch Centre for Intangible Cultural Heritage (KIEN), the day brings together heritage practitioners, policymakers, researchers, and anyone committed to connecting culture and sustainability. It is both a closing moment and a forward-looking exchange on the role of intangible heritage in tackling today’s environmental challenges.

The programme combines keynote lectures, a panel dialogue, interactive group sessions, and the premiere of the documentary Water & Land. Highlights include contributions from leading voices in heritage, sustainability, and climate action; a panel with heritage bearers, policymakers, and researchers; reflection by the Flemish UNESCO Commission; and closing remarks by Flemish Minister of Agriculture Jo Brouns.

Small-group sessions on climate-resilient heritage will allow participants to share perspectives and co-create ideas, while networking moments over coffee, lunch, and drinks encourage exchange across sectors.
