Symposium "Costumes and Collections in the Context of Cultural Heritage"

During the period of September 26-29, the Astra Museum in Sibiu is hosting the symposium “Costumes and Collections in the Context of Cultural Heritage,” attended by over 70 specialists from Romania and abroad. The event is organized in the context of the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and focuses on the theme of traditional costumes, analyzed both from an identity and ethno-cultural perspective, as well as from the standpoint of risk reduction and conservation of heritage collections.

The workshop invites reflection on how the intangible cultural heritage related to ‘costume crafts’ is recognized, analyzed, and promoted in the public sphere. Who are the key players and spectators, the institutions, associations that can contribute to applied education on the heritage value of this cultural item in the communities, groups where the craft, the activity of creation is viable, and beyond these, in civil society as a whole? What can be the role of the ethnic costume as living heritage, in the context of its definition in the 2003 UNESCO Convention, in the society of the future?

The symposium “Costumes and Collections in the Context of Cultural Heritage” is held under the patronage of the National Commission of Romania for UNESCO.
