International Day of ICH Special Screening: The Girmit Film for a New Generation

Location
To mark the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage 2026, we are organizing a special online screening of the Girmit film, a documentary narrative exploring the history, memory, and living traditions of the indentured diaspora.
The film tells the story of how Nutkhut and partners around the world created Girmit, a project shining a light on the hidden history of indentured labour and the living heritage of Girmitya communities. It follows the research with The National Archives and The Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, the gathering of personal stories, and the creation of the graphic novel with a Fijian artist and the 360° immersive film with artists across the UK and Europe. The film will be streamed online, and the full project is available at https://girmit.world.
While the film premiered on YouTube, this dedicated screening event is designed to gather the global Girmit community together in a shared moment of reflection and connection, honouring the oral histories, cultural practices, and intergenerational knowledge carried forward by descendants of indentured labourers across continents. A central goal of this initiative is intergenerational transmission: introducing this story to a younger, Gen Z audience who may be encountering this chapter of their heritage for the first time, and inviting them into ongoing conversations about identity, resilience, and cultural continuity.
The screening will be accompanied by an online conversation to foster dialogue between generations and across the diaspora, in the spirit of safeguarding living heritage for the future.
