FOLK EXPO Slovakia 2024
FOLK EXPO Slovakia 2024 is a project aimed at showcasing both traditional and innovative approaches to folk culture. The event seeks to educate, foster dialogue about the folklore industry, and bridge connections between folklore and non-folklore communities. It highlights contemporary artists’ creative interpretations of folklore and explores diverse methods of safeguarding, documenting, presenting, and promoting intangible cultural heritage.
The event features a variety of programs, including performances, exhibitions, creative workshops, concerts, and presentations by local institutions, associations, individuals, and communities engaged in the preservation of intangible cultural heritage. With its celebratory atmosphere, the event is held in the presence of the Minister or representatives of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic, who present commemorative certificates to those whose elements have been newly registered.
Stage performances are enhanced by artists closely connected to the registered elements or by the bearers of those elements themselves. A key highlight of the festival is the Ceremonial Announcement of newly inscribed elements and practices on the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Slovakia and the Register of Best Safeguarding Practices.
The event also garners significant media attention, helping to inform the public about new inscriptions and raising awareness of the importance of protecting living heritage. This year’s event is dedicated to the International ICH Day, further underscoring its commitment to the global protection of intangible cultural heritage.
