Festive Ceremonial as a Manifestation of the Remembering Culture: Resources and Strategies of the Symbolical Wealth of the Steppe Eurasia

The 20th anniversary of the UNESCO’s Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Kazakhstan coincides with the 10 years since its ratification and joining to the Convention. To mark this double anniversary, and also to emphasize the 25 years of historical and archaeological researches at the medieval city of Bozok, the State Historical Museum and Reserve of Bozok conducted the International Conference at the National Museum of Kazakhstan in Astana on the 22-24 May 2023.

The conference aimed on the actual issues of the researches, safeguarding and promotion of the intangible heritage of Eurasia. The conference has been organized by the Committee of Culture of the Mistry of Culture and Sports, the National ICH Committee and the Bozok State Museum and Reserve with the patronage of the National Commission of UNESCO and ICESCO.

The conference participants represented the wide Eurasian space – from North-Western Europe to the Eastern Siberia. It compiled archaeologists, historians, ethnographers, culturologists, art critics and museologists from Azerbaijan, Belgium, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Poland, Turkey and Russian republics and autonomous provinces: Altay, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Tuva, Khakassia, Sakha-Yakutia.

At several conference panels the participants discussed the values and meaningfulness of ceremonial, rites and its attributes in archaic and modern periods; the social value and commemoration of festive events, myths and the symbolism of the rites of passage. Eurasian festive ceremonial culture was discussed in the context of past and nowadays, safeguarding and promotion perspectives, and inventory of the Turkic peoples rites and rituals.
