Discover the Tradition of the Hořice Passion Plays – Lecture by Mgr. Jan Palkovič
To mark the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage 2025, the South Bohemian Museum in České Budějovice will host a lecture by Mgr. Jan Palkovič on the tradition of the Hořice Passion Plays, a long-standing community theatrical practice representing the story of the Passion of Christ.
The presentation will trace the historical development of this tradition from the 19th century, its interruption after the Second World War, and its community-led revitalization in the 1990s.
The event will also highlight how local actors, cultural associations and community members have contributed to transmitting and safeguarding the Hořice Passion Plays as a form of living heritage which was inscribed on the Czech national inventory of intangible cultural heritage in 2024.
Programme
The lecture, to be held on Friday 17 October 2025 at 1:00 PM in lecture hall No. 114 of the South Bohemian Museum, will be followed by a discussion with members of the Society for the Preservation of the Hořice Passion Plays.
