Danziri Festivals of the Ueno Tenjin Shrine - Sacred dance of Katte Shrine

Every October, the community of Ueno in Japan celebrates the Danziri Festivals of the Ueno Tenjin Shrine, showcasing the sacred Furyu Odori — the ritual dance of Katte Shrine, designated as one of Japan’s Important Intangible Cultural Properties.

As six dancers move in harmony to the beat of drums and songs, the splendid Ochizui blossoms accompany the ceremony, captivating all who witness this centuries-old tradition. The lively procession, known as Owatari, begins at a temporary shrine and proceeds approximately one kilometre to Katte Shrine. Along the way, horse performers, monkeys, and musicians delight onlookers, embodying joy and devotion.

Upon arrival at the shrine, a purification ritual precedes the sacred dance ceremony, which features five distinct dances — Shukui-re, Omiya-odori, Jinyaku-odori, Hidarimai no Shukui-re, and Tsushima-odori. The performances last for about two hours, concluding in the late afternoon.
