Conference Håndverk i nord / Crafts of the North

On the 6th of June Norwegian Crafts Institute and its partners arranged the seminar Løfte håndverket- Advancing the Crafts at Tromsø Museum in the city of Tromsø/ Romsa/ Tromssa.

The theme was Crafts of the North. The conference opened with introductions from Norwegian Crafts Institute where crafts as living heritage and the 20th anniversary of the Convention was emphasized.

During the gathering, where over 70 participants attended, we got many examples of the diversity of traditional crafts and living heritage in Northern Norway, with examples from Saami and Kven craft projects, boatbuilding, eider bird tending and traditional knowledge, traditional woodworking, textiles and recruiting and education.
The gathering is an important arena for dissemination of information, and we had information from the Cultural Heritage Fund, the Directorate for Cultural Heritage, the National Trust of Norway, the Savings Bank Foundation DNB and several museums. Several of the craft projects mentioned are also described on the webpage safeguardingpractices.com as interesting examples of projects for the safeguarding of intangible/living heritage.

Løfte håndverket is a network and a forum for discussion important issues concerning traditional crafts and an important channel of information. Gatherings are arranged twice a year, in spring and in fall. Representatives from important craft milieus and independent craftsmen give advice and suggest the themes for the gatherings. The Norwegian Crafts Institute leads the network.
