Chhau: Rhythms of Mask and Myth - workshop and performance

In celebration of the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, audiences are invited to experience: Chhau: Rhythms of Mask and Myth.

Chhau dance is a vibrant semi-classical Indian dance form with origins in eastern India, particularly in the states of Odisha, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. Its origin is traceable to indigenous forms of dance and martial practices, and is performed in three distinct styles: Seraikella Chhau (Jharkhand), Mayurbhanj Chhau (Odisha), and Purulia Chhau (West Bengal). Chhau is known for its use of elaborate masks, particularly in the Seraikella and Purulia styles, and its storytelling through dance, often depicting episodes from Hindu epics and folklore.
