Benefitting country(ies): Democratic Republic of the Congo
The proposed activity aims to carry out a needs identification at national and local level with the participation of communities in view of the safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage in the region of North Kivu, a long-standing conflict zone of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
In the framework of the 2003 Convention, this needs identification will allow drawing up a safeguarding plan for the intangible cultural heritage specific to the North Kivu region. On the other hand, the proposed activity is part of a broader framework of studies and reflections of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage on intangible cultural heritage in emergencies (see Decision 11.COM 15).
The activity takes place in four stages:
(i) the development of a preliminary desk study on forced displacement and intangible cultural heritage in North Kivu.
(ii) the organization of a training and awareness-raising workshop, which aims at formulating and validating the survey methodology and the questionnaire prepared for the field work, as well as ensuring the free, prior and informed consent of communities involved.
(iii) a field survey conducted by a core team of local stakeholders trained during the workshop.
(iv) the elaboration of a needs identification report based on the analysis of the results of the field survey and including recommendations for intangible cultural heritage safeguarding actions.
This activity is funded by the UNESCO Heritage Emergency Fund and implemented by the UNESCO Office in Kinshasa together with the Intangible Cultural Heritage Section based in UNESCO Headquarters.
