Objectives

The main objectives of establishing Persatuan Peranakan Baba Nyonya Malaysia (The Malaysian Baba Nyonya Association) are emphasizing the preservation, promotion, and transmission of the unique cultural heritage of the Baba Nyonya community in Malaysia. These objectives typically include: 1.Cultural Preservation To safeguard the rich traditions, customs, language (Baba Malay), cuisine, attire (such as kebaya and sarong), and arts of the Baba Nyonya community. To document and archive historical records, family genealogies, and artifacts related to Baba Nyonya heritage. 2. Promotion of Baba Nyonya Identity To raise awareness about the Baba Nyonya culture among younger generations and the wider Malaysian society. To organize cultural events, exhibitions, and workshops showcasing Baba Nyonya traditions, including food festivals, fashion shows, and craft demonstrations. 3. Community Engagement & Unity To foster solidarity among Baba Nyonya descendants and encourage intergenerational knowledge transfer. To provide a platform for social interaction, networking, and mutual support within the community. 4. Education & Research To support academic research on Baba Nyonya history, language, and contributions to Malaysian society. To collaborate with schools, universities, and cultural institutions to incorporate Baba Nyonya studies into educational programs. 5. Heritage Tourism & Economic Opportunities To promote Peranakan heritage tourism by highlighting historical sites 6. Advocacy & Recognition Collaborate with governmental and non- governmental bodies to support policies that protect Baba Nyonya culture Ensure the community’s cultural rights are recognized and respected within broader national and international heritage framework 7. Intercultural Exchange To encourage dialogue and collaboration with other ethnic communities in Malaysia, fostering multicultural understanding. To establish ties with Baba Nyonya associations globally (e.g., in Singapore, Indonesia, Australia and Thailand) for shared cultural initiatives. By pursuing these objectives, Persatuan Peranakan Baba Nyonya Malaysia aims to ensure that the unique legacy of the Baba Nyonya community continues to thrive in Malaysia’s diverse cultural landscape.

Cooperation

1. Work with Elders and Practitioners • The association actively works with elders, master artisans, and traditional practitioners of Baba Nyonya crafts, cuisine, and rituals. • Through intergenerational workshops, oral history projects, and public demonstrations, the association facilitates firsthand transmission of knowledge from experienced bearers to the younger generation. Example: • Beading and embroidery workshops with senior kasut manik makers. 2. Partnerships with Cultural Groups and NGOs • The association regularly partners with the Baba Nyonya societies (e.g. in Penang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Singapore, Thailand and Indonesia). • Cultural NGOs working in heritage conservation and community arts. (eg Minnan Culture Research Centre in Xiamen, PRC). • These partnerships enable joint festivals, cross-regional exhibitions, and documentation projects, allowing for shared learning and promotion of shared heritage. 3. Engagement with Government Agencies and Museums The Association collaborates with national and state agencies such as: • Department of National Heritage (JWN) • National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN) • Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka • Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) • Ministry of National Unity (Jabatan Perpaduan Negara) These collaborations have led to: • Inclusion of Baba Nyonya heritage in the National Heritage List under National Heritage Act 2005 (Act 645). • Contributions to ICH inventories. • Participation in heritage dialogue sessions and policy consultations 4. Documentation and Research Collaboration • The organization supports academic and independent research by facilitating interviews, fieldwork, and cultural documentation. • It provides access to practitioners and acts as a bridge between researchers and the community, ensuring ethical and respectful knowledge sharing.
