In celebration of International Mother Language Day, the Smithsonian’s Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage launches a new ‘Festival Photo Gallery’ showcasing the many cultural experts who shared their language revitalization efforts and cultural traditions as part of the One World, Many Voices: Endangered Languages and Cultural Heritage programme at the 2013 Smithsonian Folklife Festival.
Produced in collaboration with UNESCO, the National Geographic Society’s Enduring Voices Project, and the Smithsonian’s Recovering Voices Initiative, the One World, Many Voices programme highlighted the importance of language diversity to the vitality of human heritage worldwide. More than 130 cultural experts from 18 different language communities across the globe came together on the National Mall of the United States to demonstrate the integral ways in which languages embody cultural knowledge, identity, values and creative expressions. The One World, Many Voices website features a wide variety of resources, including an online interactive Endangered Languages Story Map, a video and audio gallery, background information on the diverse language communities that participated in the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, a music playlist, blog posts and much more.
