‘Sustainability Starts with Teachers’ is an innovative UNESCO-led capacity-building programme for southern African teacher educators in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE), Primary and Secondary Education, and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) from 11 countries. It responds to regional sustainable development concerns and opportunities, the Africa 2063 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). As a direct outcome of this project, ‘culture-specific’ resource material for teachers was developed, aiming at providing teachers with practical tools on how to integrate living heritage in the classroom.
4 lesson plans have been co-developed with the insights of teachers who have piloted them in their classrooms.
This lesson plan on ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage Lesson Plan for Sustainable Development: Diketo’, is suitable for students from grade 3rd-5th. Diketo is an indigenous game used across Southern Africa.
During his lesson, Diketo will be played by the class. Students will explore their own and classmates’ familiarity with the game and learn its rules. They will have a chance to practice the game and play with one another in pairs or in small groups. Through this game, the students will explore the cultural significance of Diketo across Southern Africa and practice math skills of addition and subtraction based on this game. To conclude the lesson, students will work in small groups to reflect on the game of Diketo as a real-life math problem, which they can answer questions about and review with the class.
