Voices of the Silbo Gomero: an interview podcast
On the occasion of the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage 2025, the Teacher Training Centre (CEP) of La Gomera is highlighting a recent project linking living heritage and education, and invites everyone to discover the podcast ‘Voces del Silbo’.
During the final stage of the 2024/2025 school year, the Teacher Training Centre (CEP) of La Gomera proposed a special activity to the island’s schools with the aim of further strengthening the value of Silbo Gomero as a living heritage: conducting interviews within the educational and social environment about their connection with this unique tradition. The response was enthusiastic.
Students from five schools —CEIP Ruiz de Padrón, IES San Sebastián, CEIP Áurea Miranda, CEO Vallehermoso and CEO Nereida Díaz Abreu— actively participated in preparing interviews with people from their immediate surroundings. Among those interviewed were silbo instructors, student whistlers, family members, members of the educational community and even the mayor of San Sebastián, all of whom shared their experiences, memories and reflections on silbo as an expression of Gomero identity.
It was a simple yet meaningful initiative, reminding us that Silbo is not only taught: it is lived, transmitted and celebrated in everyday life.
