The Roads to Liberty

From 15 September to 15 October 2025, the San Marcellino art, culture and creativity (SMacc) in Genoa, Italy will host Dragon Dance Theatre’s Sam Kerson and Katah, for a community-based cultural project exploring the theme of slavery and freedom and the transmission of cultural memory.

An exhibition of digital prints from Sam Kerson’s mural “The Underground Railroad” will be presented, highlighting stories of historical resistance and liberation.

Simultaneously, SMacc will organise a collective art workshop together with members of the community, including participants with special needs. The inclusive workshop will focus on sharing personal and collective reflections on the forms of enslavement we experience today, whether social, economic, or psychological, and exploring pathways toward greater freedom, responsibility, and well-being. Offering an opportunity to engage participants in an artistic journey of sharing and exchange. The workshop will highlight how art and intangible cultural heritage can serve as powerful tools for social change and mutual understanding, while reaffirming their relevance as sources of resilience and social cohesion.

Programme:
Investigation, storytelling, and creative workshops leading to the co-creation of a community mural on the theme of liberation.
