State Folklore Review UHAKUD u BiH

Seminar of folklore UHAKUD u BiH

The main goal for which the association UHAKUD u BiH (Association of Croatian amateur cultural and artistic societies in Bosnia and Herzegovina) was founded is the safeguarding of the intangible cultural heritage of Croats in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In order to realize this goal, we designed annual programs that enable the transfer of cultural heritage to new generations, its presentation and promotion.

The Seminar of folklore UHAKUD u BiH is one of such annual programs.

The seminar is open to everyone who wants to learn about the traditional culture inherited and preserved by the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The participants are young people from Bosnia and Herzegovina and descendants of our emigrants who want to learn about the traditional culture of their ancestors, and they apply for public invitations that we send through our website and social networks.

We organize our folklore seminar as a summer camp. The association provides premises and equipment for lectures and practical training, lecturers and presenters, accommodation and food, as well as trips to places related to the practice of certain forms of ICH in the area.

Every year we process one of the four ethnological basins in Bosnia and Herzegovina. General theories about the ethnological features of the area as well as separate thematic units, separately for music, dance, oral heritage, traditional ceremonies, handicrafts or traditional cuisine and others are taught by university professors hired by the association for these purposes. Young people learn practical application from presenters, heirs of the ICH element from local communities and associations from the area being worked on. In addition to the direct transfer of knowledge and skills, the seminar gives young people the opportunity to meet scientists, experts and heirs of individual elements of ICH, exchange contacts and, if necessary, additional education in the arrangement of an individual group.

After processing all ethnological pools, UHAKUD u BiH publishes a Collection of works and lectures from the Seminar.

This year’s 9th Folklore Seminar UHAKUD u BiH will be held in Kupres on August 17-20, 2023. under the name “Songs, dances, costumes and customs of the Croats of Herzegovina”. The ethnological basin of Herzegovina will be studied.

The seminar is part of the International celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the Convention on Intangible Cultural Heritage, and one of the lectures within the seminar will be dedicated to this topic.
