Kolattam in Mauritius: Preserving an Intangible Cultural Heritage

Kolattam, a traditional folk dance with deep roots in Tamil culture, has been practiced in Mauritius for generations, brought over by Tamil ancestors. Recognizing its cultural significance, the Mauritius Tamil Cultural Centre Trust (MTCCT) has made concerted efforts to preserve and promote this vibrant art form through various initiatives.
MTCCT organized a national Kolattam competition, which saw enthusiastic participation from 147 individuals across the island, showcasing their skills and dedication to this traditional dance. To further raise awareness and deepen the community’s engagement, MTCCT held numerous workshops, focusing on educating and involving the younger generation in this rich heritage. As an intangible cultural heritage, Kolattam holds a special place in the Mauritian Tamil community, symbolizing the cultural continuity between Mauritius and India. MTCCT’s initiatives have drawn the attention of many dignitaries and VVIPs, who attended these events, underscoring the importance of preserving and celebrating this unique tradition for future generations.
Through its ongoing workshops and competitions, the MTCCT remains committed to ensuring Kolattam thrives, instilling pride in young Mauritians while safeguarding this cultural treasure.
