Exhibition: La Plaza Grande de Quito: Fascinations, Struggles, and Silences
As part of a series of events organized in October 2025 by the Instituto Nacional de Patrimonio Cultural (INPC) to mark the International Day of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, la Circasiana hosts the exhibition ‘La Plaza Grande de Quito: Fascinations, Struggles, and Silences’. It presents INSTITUTO METROPOLITANO DE PATRIMONIO QUITO ECUADOR’s decade-long research on Quito’s main square. Through archival photographs, audio recordings of oral histories, and personal objects donated by residents, the display reveals untold stories: street vendors’ guild traditions since 1920, political protests that shaped national history, and intimate memories of everyday life. Interactive stations invite visitors to record their own Plaza Grande memories, contributing to an ongoing digital archive. The exhibition particularly highlights how public spaces accumulate layers of intangible heritage through collective use and memory.
