2023 Korea-Japan Festival in Seoul

The Korea-Japan Festival was launched in 2005 as a symbolic event of the “Japan-Korea Friendship Year” to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two countries, and has been held annually in Seoul. Since 2009, the Festival has been held annually in both Seoul and Tokyo, as a means for Japan and Korea to build up their relationship together. The Festival is one of the largest Japan-Korea cross cultural events that is expected to attract tens of thousands of visitors every year.

As a highlight of this year’s event, special Japan-Korea traditional masked dance performances (Japan: “Iwasaki Oni Kenbai” / Korea: “Bongsan Talchum”) will take place to celebrate the simultaneous inscription of both Japanese and Korean traditional mask dance dramas (Japan: “Furyu Odori” / Korea: “Talchum”) on the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2022, and to provide an opportunity to publicize the cultures and traditions of the two countries.
