The ninth session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage today inscribed three new elements on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding:
- Isukuti dance of Isukha and Idakho communities of Western Kenya (Kenya)
- Male-child cleansing ceremony of the Lango of central northern Uganda (Uganda)
- Mapoyo oral tradition and its symbolic reference points within their ancestral territory (Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela)
Inscriptions on this List help to mobilize international cooperation and assistance for stakeholders to undertake appropriate measures to safeguard intangible cultural heritage whose viability is at risk despite the efforts of the community and the States Parties concerned.
The Committee has also selected Safeguarding the carillon culture: preservation, transmission, exchange and awareness-raising (Belgium) for the Register of Best Safeguarding Practices.
Chaired by H.E. Mr José Manuel Rodríguez, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Peru to UNESCO, the Committee is currently held at UNESCO Headquarters from 24 to 28 November. It will soon start the examination of nominations to the Representative List. Follow the meeting live:
