Presentation of the audiovisual: The Masovera Culture in the Maestrazgo

The audiovisual has been created within the Plan to Safeguard Masovera Culture, developed over the years 2023-2024. This project has been developed with the subsidy granted by the Ministry of Culture of the Government of Spain, for the safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Maestrazgo farmhouses are still today a unit of development, use and management of the ecological and sustainable landscape. This unit is formed by the building of the farmhouse in the strict sense and by many other elements such as pasture lands, farmland often terraced and with dry stone walls, orchards, wells, irrigation ditches, wooded areas where hunting takes place, mushrooms and firewood are collected and wood is extracted for construction… And above all, it also has a rich intangible heritage associated with uses, representations, expressions, knowledge and techniques typical of a dispersed habitat characteristic of the mountainous areas of the Iberian System of Teruel. Some particularities of this habitat such as its distance from the area of urban centres, its relatively autonomous character from life in the villages, and the strong roots of the masovera culture have allowed the conservation of many elements of the Intangible Heritage that have already been extinct for decades in other contexts. Linguistic features, their own celebrations, dances and collective identity have for centuries distinguished those who lived in the farmhouses from the urban centres of nearby villages. Despite all this, this unique and unique culture is in serious danger due to the imminent disappearance of the last generation of people born and raised in these farmhouses.

The production of the audiovisual has sought to show the importance of this culture for the region, also demonstrating that it is something that is still alive. The audiovisual has been made with the intention of wide dissemination, reaching out to all types of population, and providing an image of opportunity. Relying on real testimonies, which still coexist in the mass area, and which is their way of life.
