Element Barkcloth making in Uganda (Uganda)

Inscribed in 2008 (3.COM) on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (originally proclaimed in 2005)

Title EN: The Mutaba tree provides the raw material for the delicate manufacture of bark-cloth. Produced for the royal family and other Buganda community members and highly recognized as a marker of cultural traditions, this precious cloth is worn at coronations and healing ceremonies, funerals and social gatherings.
Title FR: L’arbre Mutaba fournit la matière première pour la délicate fabrication du tissu d’écorce. Confectionné pour la famille royale et les autres membres de la communauté Baganda, ce tissu emblématique de leurs traditions culturelles est porté à l’occasion des couronnements, des cérémonies de guérison, des funérailles et des rassemblements sociaux.
Title ES: El árbol mutuba proporciona el material utilizado para la delicada fabricación de tejidos de corteza vegetal. Producido para la familia real y otros miembros de la comunidad baganda y muy valorado como símbolo distintivo de las tradiciones culturales, este preciado tejido se usa principalmente en ceremonias de coronación y curación, así como en funerales y reuniones sociales.
