Element Kankurang, Manding initiatory rite (Gambia - Senegal)

Inscribed in 2008 (3.COM) on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (originally proclaimed in 2005)

Title EN: The Kankurang is a protective spirit, embodied by a masked and costumed man, at the centre of a ritual system comprising songs, traditions and initiatory rites for young boys. The ritual ensures the transmission and teaching of complex know-how and practices underpinning Manding cultural identity.
Title FR: Esprit protecteur incarné par un homme costumé et masqué, le Kankurang est au coeur d’un système rituel comprenant chants, traditions et rites initiatiques pour les jeunes garçons. Il assure l’enseignement d’un ensemble complexe de savoir-faire et de pratiques constitutives de l’identité culturelle mandingue.
