Title EN: Popular throughout Nicaragua, the El Güegüense is a satirical street drama accompanied by music and dance, developed in the eighteenth century. The beautifully costumed and masked protagonist, El Güegüe, cleverly uses verbal artistry in Spanish, Basque and Nahuatl, an Amerindian language, to demonstrate subservience to the colonial authorities while ridiculing them.
Title FR: Apparu au XVIIIe siècle, El Güegüense est un drame de rue satirique accompagné de musique et de danses, très populaire dans tout le pays. Le personnage central, El Güegüe, somptueusement costumé et masqué, use d’habiles manoeuvres verbales en espagnol, basque et nahuatl – langue amérindienne – pour feindre la servitude vis-à-vis de l’autorité coloniale tout en la ridiculisant.
Title ES: Famoso en toda Nicaragua, el Güegüense es una representación callejera de carácter satírico con música y bailes nacida en el siglo XVIII. Ataviado con un hermoso traje y una máscara, el Güegüense, su protagonista, hace gala de ingenio verbal en español, vasco y náhuatl, una lengua amerindia, para rendir pleitesía a las autoridades coloniales y ridiculizarlas al mismo tiempo.
