Element Cultural space of the Yaaral and Degal (Mali)

Inscribed in 2008 (3.COM) on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (originally proclaimed in 2005)

Title EN: Organized by the Peul community, the Yaaral and Degal festivals mark the twice-yearly crossing of the Niger river by herds of cattle. This seasonal migration gives rise to widely appreciated and varied celebrations and expressions, such as competitions for the most beautifully decorated herd, recitations of pastoral poems and songs.
Title FR: Organisées par la communauté peule, les festivités du Yaaral et du Degal marquent la traversée du fleuve Niger par les troupeaux de bétail. Deux fois par an, cette transhumance donne lieu à des expressions variées et très populaires, notamment des concours du troupeau le mieux décoré, des déclamations de poèmes ou de chants pastoraux.
Title ES: Organizadas por los pueblos peul, las fiestas del yaaral y el degal marcan la travesía del río Níger, dos veces al año, de manadas de ganado. Esta trashumancia da lugar a diversas celebraciones y manifestaciones muy apreciadas, como competiciones para determinar la manada mejor aderezada, declamaciones de poemas pastoriles y canciones.
