Element Oral and graphic expressions of the Wajapi (Brazil)

Inscribed in 2008 (3.COM) on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (originally proclaimed in 2003)

Title EN: Wajapi communities in northern Amazonia have a long history of producing and using vegetable dyes to adorn their bodies with geometric motifs and symbols. Motifs of the jaguar, anaconda, butterfly and fish animate the worldview and oral traditions of the Wajapi.
Title FR: Depuis la nuit des temps, les communautés Wajapi dans le nord de l’Amazonie produisent et utilisent des teintures végétales pour dessiner des motifs et symboles géométriques sur leur corps. Les motifs récurrents du jaguar, de l’anaconda, du papillon et du poisson évoquent leur vision du monde et nourrissent leurs traditions orales.
Title ES: Desde tiempos inmemoriales, las comunidades wajapis del norte de la Amazonia elaboran tintes vegetales que utilizan para adornarse el cuerpo con símbolos y motivos geométricos. Figuras como el jaguar, la anaconda, la mariposa o el pez animan la cosmogonía y las tradiciones orales de los wajapis.
