Element Ahellil of Gourara (Algeria)

Inscribed in 2008 (3.COM) on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (originally proclaimed in 2005)

Title EN: The Ahellil is a series of collective chants performed at social gatherings and celebrations of the Berber-speaking population of the Gouara region. Starting with short well-known songs performed by the whole group, the performances build to a conclusion featuring the most accomplished singers.
Title FR: L’Ahellil est une série de chants collectifs entonnés lors des rassemblements et festivités de la population berbère du Gourara. Les séances débutent par des chants courts, connus de tous les chanteurs, et se terminent par des interprétations des choristes les plus expérimentés.
Title ES: El ahellil consiste en una serie de cánticos colectivos que se entonan con ocasión de festejos y reuniones sociales. Es propio de las poblaciones de habla berebere de la región del Gurara. Empezando con canciones breves y conocidas que interpreta todo el grupo, la actuación progresa hasta su apogeo, que pone en escena a los mejores cantantes.
